DBS Checks
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions each year by processing and issuing DBS checks for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
DBS also maintains the Adults’ and Children’s Barred Lists, and makes considered decisions as to whether an individual should be included on one or both of these lists and barred from engaging in regulated activity.
What is a DBS Umbrella Body?
A DBS umbrella body is an organisation that can do Disclosure and Barring service checks on your behalf.
There is a central register with all the organisations across the country that are providing this service.
DBS umbrella organisations will charge an administration fee for the use of the service, so please check with the organisation to see what this will be.
You can follow this link to to the Government website to find the register.
You will be able to get the contact details for various organisations across the local and national area who provide DBS checks including online services that are available.

DBS Update Service
The Disclosure and Barring Service launched the Update Service to enable DBS certificates to be kept up-to-date and transferable from role-to-role, within the same workforce (this includes volunteers), where the same type and level of check is required.
The update service is available for Standard and Enhanced DBS checks, and individuals can join the update service by following this link to register online within 28 days of DBS receiving their disclosure application.
Organisations do not need to join the service, as they can access the service online for free to carry out a status check on an individual’s DBS certificate. Follow this link for more information on the DBS tracking service.
The update service costs £16.00 per annum for paid staff and is free if joining with a DBS certificate for a voluntary position.
