Lincolnshire Resilient Communities

Introduction

What is Lincolnshire Resilient Communities and how can your community get involved?

When it comes to natural disasters such as flooding, power outages, and communication problems, people can become afraid and isolated and this is where building a resilient community can help people at times when disaster can strike.

Unfortunately we live in times where unforeseen disasters can happen, such as people being forced to leave the safety of their homes due to rising floodwaters, or having a power outage leaving them with no heating, lighting and any means to cook warm food.

Whilst the emergency services, government agencies and local authorities can play a crucial role in helping, often it is the people within communities that pull together, who offer the quickest help and support.

Why Build a Resilient Community?

By being proactive, and preparing for emergencies, local communities can adopt a well-defined emergency plan that can protect and support residents until professional help arrives.

Having a central co-ordinated point can make all the difference at a time of crisis such as:

  • Streamlining communication: Everyone knows who to contact and how to receive vital information
  • Coordinating resources: Essential supplies, shelters, and volunteers are efficiently allocated
  • Minimising confusion: Clear guidelines and procedures keep everyone in action and minimise confusion

How Do I Build a Resilient Community?

Lincolnshire County Council’s Emergency Planning & Business Continuity Service has launched a ground-breaking new tool designed to help communities create their own emergency plans.

You answer a series of straightforward questions about your community that allows you to generate a tailored emergency plan.

As Lincolnshire is large and diverse with coastal areas and low lying land that is susceptable to flooding for example, having a tailored plan will ensure your community meets the specific needs and vunerabilities of its residents.

What plan works for one community, may not necessarily be the right plan for another community.

Once you have answered these questions, it will generate a draft plan that is sent to the community to review and if needed, customise.

A copy of the plan is also securely stored at the County Emergency Centre, allowing for future development and rapid response in the event of an emergency.
